Breaker Program - Eligibility and Application Process

| To Qualify: |
1) Property must be occupied
by the senior citizen & located in the State of Illinois.
2) Senior must be responsible for paying the property taxes or paying
the rent.
3) Senior must be 65 years of age or older in the application year.
4) Total household income in the year prior to the application year
must not exceed
$21,218 senior citizen living alone
$28,480 for a senior citizen and spouse
$35,740 for senior citizen, spouse,
and one other resident of the same household.
5) Application must be filed no later than December 31st of the application
year. |
Documents
Needed: |
a) Tax Bill or Rental Lease
(Name of senior citizen must appear on this document).
b) Birth Certificate or Drivers License showing proof of age.
c) Income information from prior year that includes Social Security
Statement, 1040 Income Tax Form (if filed), 1099
forms, pension & annuity statements for
all household residents. Documents must prove total
household
income does not exceed limits as shown above.
d) Application form must be signed by senior citizen and notarized
by a public notary. |
| Process: |
Call our office first to
obtain application. Complete it and bring it to our office along with
documents "a", "b", and "c", and we
will photocopy all documents and return originals to you. We will
review the application and ask you to sign it and we will notarize
your signature. The application will be processed to the state. ALL
INCOME INFORMATION WILL BE HELD IN STRICT CONFIDENCE AND DOES
NOT BECOME PART OF ANY PUBLIC RECORD. Process must be repeated each
year to obtain the rebate. |
| Effect: |
The circuit breaker program
does not reduce property taxes, however, it allows the senior to receive
a rebate from the State of Illinois. The amount of rebate depends
upon your household income versus the property taxes or rent you pay.
